Susan Power

Susan Power spoke with Ninth Letter in October 2007 when she visited the UIUC campus as a Carr Series Reader. She is an award-winning writer, social activist, and charismatic performance reader. Always vibrant, Susan discussed some new ideas and did an impromptu reading as part of the interview. Susan grew up in Chicago, is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux nation and is a descendant of the Sioux Chief Mato Nupa (Two Bears). She received degrees from Harvard/Radcliffe and Harvard Law School, and attended the Iowa Writers Workshop. She writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as teaching creative writing. Her novel, The Grass Dancer won the 1995 PEN/Hemmingway Award for Best First Fiction.
