Reagan Louie
Reagan Louie's photographs document a journey that can be understood on two different levels. As personal history they trace Louie's determination to reconcile his American identity with his Chinese ancestry. The American-born son of Chinese grocer parents, Louie has spoken eloquently about his sense of dislocation and displacement — being seen as Chinese in the United States, but being viewed as American in China.
On another level, Louie's photographs stand as evidence of the vast social changes now sweeping through the most populous region of the planet. China in particular, but really all of Asia, is coming under increasing cultural influence from the West and undergoing social, economic, and environmental changes that are unprecedented in its history.
Presented here is a conversation between Louie and artist/UIUC Narrative Media Professor Nan Goggin. Speaking via an iChat video link – Louie was in San Francisco, while Goggin was in Illinois – their conversation focused on Sex in Asia, Louie's most recent photographic book on the sex trade in Asia.
