Making Basquiat

Travis Kurowski's essay "Basquiat and Six Uses of Space" is a rumination on the sources of creativity—where and how do writers, artists, musicians, creators in all media find the spark of inspiration? In Making Basquiat, designer Adam Fotos and art director Jennifer Gunji discuss the development of a design for this essay, which appears Ninth Letter's Fall/Winter 07-8 issue. Ninth Letter has received significant attention for graphic design, but the meticulous (and yet chaotic) process by which we produce each issue remains something of a mystery to our readers. This behind-the-scenes look at Ninth Letter design explores how artists generate and realize their ideas, and Kurowski's themes are mirrored in the process of how one painter/designer connects with the text to find its perfect graphic complement.
